The invitation read: Please join your friends at BMI as we congratulate MusicRow magazine founder, journalist and now author David M. Ross with a party celebrating the publication of his digital marketing insiders guidebook, Secrets of the List.
And it was a great gathering. Of course no one recaps a party like the inimitable Bobby Karl of Bobby Karl Works The Room fame, (read his story here), but I wanted to share some of my favorite photos from the event and personal observations. First, what a great feeling to have over 100 people stop by to offer their congratulations. Thank you so much to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to attend.
The event was full of surprises. BMI’s Kay Clary, welcomed the crowd and reminisced about watching me during the the early years of MusicRow magazine, its significance for the community and to wish me well with the new book.
I thought she was going to introduce me to say a few words, but instead, surprised me by calling Sherod Robertson to offer congrats from him and the MusicRow staff plus present me with a special plaque to commemorate my, “first event as an author.” The plaque had a blow up of the beautiful BMI poster invite plus a space for a card which was being circulated to get signatures from all the attendees.
Finally it was my turn to thank everyone. “It’s no secret,” I said, “that loyal supporters and friends are an essential ingredient for success for a magazine and for a book. All of you have been there with me every step of the way and I thank you.”
I also mentioned a few of the people that had helped creatively with the new book such as Cronin Creative who designed the cover, Sarah Skates who helped with the editing and AristoMedia’s Jeff Walker who headed up the book’s publicity and public relations implementation.
And then it was over to the table to start signing books. I had no idea what it would be like signing books, but it was a blast, visiting briefly with each person and trying to think of something to write about them. One friend who was at the party but I didn’t get a chance to speak with emailed and said, “We couldn’t get near you—there were so many fans! It was a joy to watch!”
How do I describe the new book? Secrets Of The List is a “how to” book written in easy-to-understand language and designed to introduce a direct marketing strategy using email and social media. My hope is that Secrets of the List will inspire readers to find new ways to introduce themselves and their work to a worldwide audience.
